Health Education Workshops
Health Education Workshops assist, inform, and enrich the lives of seniors and differently-abled individuals. Featured workshops help older adults reduce their fear of falling, maintain healthy eating habits, improve activity levels, and remain socially active.
People We Serve:
Health Education Workshops are available to individuals 60 years of age or older and individuals of any age who are differently-abled. Classes are offered throughout the East Bay community, including East Providence, Barrington, Bristol, Portsmouth, Middletown, Newport, Tiverton, and Little Compton.
Key Features
- A Matter of Balance is a workshop designed to increase activity levels among older adults who are concerned about falls. This workshop may be suitable for you if you:
- Have sustained falls in the past
- Restrict activities because of concerns about falling
- Are interested in improving flexibility, balance, and strength
- Are age 60+, community-dwelling, and able to problem solve
It is designed to reduce participants’ fear of falling, which often limits their activities and can result in physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. This workshop includes 8 two-hour small-group sessions led by a trained facilitator.
- Healthy Eating for Successful Living in Older Adults is a nutrition educational and support program. The focus is to encourage participants to understand and implement lifestyle changes that can promote better health. Based on the USDA MyPlate™, the program includes instruction on label reading and portion control. It also provides detailed nutrition education on the different food groups, including fats and sweets. Participants learn goal setting, problem-solving, and management of dietary patterns. Individuals participate in hands-on activities, including meal preparation and/or cooking demonstrations. This workshop includes six 90-minute, small-group sessions led by a trained facilitator.
- Walk With Ease, the Arthritis Foundation’s program that is proven to reduce the pain of arthritis and improve your overall health. Whether you need relief from arthritis pain or want to be active, the Arthritis Foundation’s six-week Walk With Ease program can teach you how to make physical activity a part of your everyday life safely. The program includes a guidebook and a walking schedule to get you safely moving toward better health. Studies by the Thurston Arthritis Research Center and the Institute on Aging of the University of North Carolina show that Walk With Ease is proven to:
• Reduce the pain and discomfort of arthritis
• Increase balance, strength, and walking pace
• Build confidence in your ability to be physically active
• Improve overall health
Walk With Ease group sessions meet three times per week for six weeks. Trained group exercise leaders begin each session with a pre-walk discussion covering a specified topic related to exercise and arthritis, followed by a 10- to 40-minute walk that includes a warm-up and a cool-down.
