East Bay Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

Please note – this program operates from mid to late January through April 15th.

It is important for you to know that unemployment is taxable income.  Please don’t be caught off-guard when filing your tax return.

What to Bring to Your Tax Appointment

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) provides IRS-trained and certified tax professionals to provide tax-preparation services to clients. VITA volunteers provide timely, quality, and free tax preparation for low to moderate-income individuals and families. Volunteers not only prepare tax returns but simultaneously provide education to clients about their returns and eligible tax credits.

People We Serve

East Bay Community Action Program’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program has trained and certified preparers available to provide free tax preparation to clients earning under $63,398.00. In 2024 we will have two tax preparation sites:

  • St. Brendan’s Church, Community Hall, 55 Turner Ave, Riverside RI 02915; hours of VITA program operation: Mondays and Tuesdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 401-435-7876, Ext. 1137. Please do not call St. Brendan’s Church to schedule an appointment.
  • Benjamin Church Center, 1020 Hope Street, Bristol, RI; hours of VITA program operation: Thursdays and Fridays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To schedule an appointment, please call 401-435-7876, Ext. 1137. Please do not call Benjamin Church Center to schedule an appointment.

Please call to make an appointment at either of these sites.  Call the Office of Volunteer Services at 401-435-7876, ext. 1137 after January 2nd to schedule an appointment.

Please note that a valid Driver’s License/Photo ID for the taxpayer and social security cards for the taxpayer and all dependents are mandatory. If possible, please print out and complete the VITA Tax Survey and the Intake/Interview & Quality Review Form (found below) and bring them to your appointment.

Preparers also help taxpayers to receive tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, and Tax Credits for the Elderly. If you are not required to file a federal income tax return but live in a dwelling subject to property tax and area age 65+ and earn under $30,000 annually, you may be eligible for the Rhode Island Property Tax Relief Credit.

Eligible persons may call the Office of Volunteer Services at 401-435-7876, Ext. 1137 between January 2nd and April 14th to schedule an appointment.
